Hip Urban Fall Looks Take Over the Streets

By Patrick Michael Hughes | September 28, 2012 12:36pm

MANHATTAN — It seems nothing feels as well-dressed or instinctual as black and denim at this time of year. And on Manhattan's streets, black and denim are taking many forms and countless shapes and textures.

Street Chic noticed a host of favorite and new clothing items making their debut this season — including tailored suits, beautifully patina leather jackets, volume draped layers of angora and wool, plush open-weave knit wraps and a Lovat tweed hunting vests paired with early fall’s fashionable Chambray shirting.

Street Chic was pleased to bump into indie singer Devendra Banhart on Broadway. (The songwriter  has collaborated with musicians including Beck, The Strokes and MGMT). Banhart’s dapper look consisted of an inky black-brushed cotton cropped suit, fashioned with a cardigan and a button up black and white check shirt. He wore contrasting brown oxfords with lavender stripe socks.

The black leather jacket, a ubiquitous urban fashion staple also enjoyed a strong early fall presence — and we could not help admiring the asymmetric leather jackets, with emphasis on falling collars or the cascading hip length hemline. An artist’s D.I.Y. T-shirt with sleeve details and an Irish alternative rock music logo also caught our attention, as did a pair of leather pants paired with leggings and attention-grabbing blue suede boots.

The bursts of color we spotted were a very directional spice-colored suede vest with a draped asymmetric collar and motorcycle details. A rich Double R.L. brand look of a brown Lovat tweed vest, a Chambray shirt, Maccallum Tartan tie and tie-pin was a sharp style spotted in SoHo. We also noticed sexy, bare-shoulder Chambray shirt style on Thompson Street in the West Village.

Street Chic also took note of the of the seasonal return of the black ribbed-knit hat — a perennial cool weather accessory and urban look.
