LIC Art Exhibit to Feature Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns

LONG ISLAND CITY — The works of the biggest contemporary artists, from Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns to Kiki Smith and Nan Goldin will be on display at a Long Island City art center starting this Friday.

“Visual Conversations: Selections from the Collection” will present paintings, sculptures and photography from the vast collection of Fisher Landau Center for Art alongside pieces that Emily Fisher Landau pledged to the Whitney Museum of American Art in May 2010.

More than 80 pieces by 43 artists will be on display at the Landau Center, which is located in a former parachute harness factory.

“The exhibition is laid out on three floors of the Center, each having a unique character based on artworks with thematic similarities, formal strategies and common use of materials,” said Nicholas Arbatsky, director of Fisher Landau Center for Art. “The overall effect allows viewers to get a better understanding for Mrs. Landau's essence of adventure in creating the collection.”

Arbatsky also pointed out that a number of artworks will make their inaugural debut at the center, including “Flags,” a 1986 painting by Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly’s “Black White,” from 1970, and “The Shadow,” by Andy Warhol from 1981.

Some of the works will be part of a traveling exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum that will tour various museums, including Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, in Florida, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT and Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan.

Among the other artists to be included — many of whose work was purchased by Landau at the beginning of their careers — are Richard Artschwager, Donald Baechler, John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Jenny Holzer, Alfredo Jaar, Neil Jenney, Glenn Ligon, Susan Rothenberg, Ed Ruscha and Cy Twombly.

“Visual Conversations: Selections from the Collection” will be on view from Sept. 28 to Nov. 30. Fisher Landau Center for Art is located at 38-27 30th St. in Long Island City.
