EAST VILLAGE — Two schools will be relocated this week after an apparently faulty wall prompted the evacuation of the East 12th Street building where they had been housed, the Department of Education said Tuesday.
Students at the schools, located at 412 East 12th St., were forced to leave the building Monday after part of a wall started "coming apart," an education spokeswoman said.
None of the children was injured. The students were temporarily relocated to other schools.
Beginning Thursday, students at Girls Prep Lower East Middle School will be housed in P.S. 158, located at 1458 York Ave., said Marge Feinberg, a DOE spokeswoman. The East Side Community School will move to Norman Thomas High School at 111 E. 33rd St., she added.
Students who qualify for yellow bus transportation can be shuttled from the East 12th Street building to their new locations, the DOE said.
An investigation determined that the integrity of the building came into question after one of the walls began separating from the building.
"There appeared to be structural damage to the building," Feinberg said. "The east wall was found to be separating from the rest of the structure."
It was unclear how long the repairs will take.
"We are evaluating the repair work," Feinberg added.
The Department of Buildings did not comment about the incident, deferring all comment to the DOE.
