WILLIAMSBURG — Whether you crave their creamy ricotta-egg combo, their pungent sardine sandwich, or their chewy potato tortilla cozied between bread slices, acclaimed sandwich joint Saltie is about to share its culinary secrets with anyone who cares to read.
The understated Metropolitan Avenue eatery — a self-proclaimed "sandwich shop," though its offerings run the gamut from fried rice to pastries — is releasing its cookbook within the next couple of weeks, with a debut reading at WORD bookstore replete with free food samples.
"I like to write about food, and this [cookbook] seemed like a natural extension of cooking for me," said Caroline Fidanza, co-owner of Saltie, who opened the business three years ago with her former coworkers from South Williamsburg's Marlow & Sons.
"The book includes pretty much everything we do here."
That includes Fidanza's favorite egg bowl (egg fried rice with mustard greens), as well as an array of soups, salads and addictive sandwiches, Fidanza noted.
But she's not worried about losing customers to at-home chefs who try to mirror their creations with Saltie's soon-to-be transparent recipes.
"I find them to be more inspiration-based," Fidanza said of cookbooks. "I think you can definitely pull it off if you try, but I see this as being more ideas about what you can do at home."
WORD Bookstore will host Saltie's cookbook debut reading Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
