GREENPOINT — Cops have amped up speeding enforcement this year in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, doling out more than twice the number of summonses to motorists as they did in 2011, officials said.
The speeding crackdown has focused on two strips infamous for accidents — McGuinness Boulevard between the Pulaski Bridge and Meserole Avenue, and Meeker Avenue under the BQE — said Deputy Inspector Terence Hurson, commanding officer of the 94th Precinct.
"It's speeding that causes bad accidents, that kills pedestrians and bikers," Hurson said, "so that's become a major part of our enforcement."
In the 94th Precinct this year, Hurson said, cops have handed out 390 summonses so far — about one-third of Brooklyn's total.
"It's more of an issue here at McGuinness Blvd," he said, of the street advocates have long argued is unsafe — and where two out of three drivers broke the speed limit of 30 mph, according to a study released in March by Transportation Alternatives, Neighbors Allied for Good Growth of Brooklyn and Community Board One members.
"Before I even got the study on McGuinness I knew it was a problem," Hurson said, "but we've really stepped up efforts even more since then."
