Kite-Flying Fest Returns to Port Authority Rooftop

By Mathew Katz | September 18, 2012 1:16pm

HELL'S KITCHEN — Let's all fly a kite — on the rooftop of the city's bus station.

Hundreds of families will ascend to the roof of the Port Authority Bus Terminal for its eighth-annual Kite Flight Sunday. The event gives kids and their parents the opportunity to take to the skies on the rarely seen rooftop space.

The Sunday afternoon event, hosted by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District, will feature kite-making workshops with local artists where kids can design and create their own custom flyers. Experts will also show participants how to fly their kites as high as possible.

The circus-like event included everything from acrobats, unicyclists and jugglers to arts and crafts and free food.

To get up to where the action is, visitors must enter the Port Authority from the south side on Eighth Avenue, off of West 40th Street. From there, signs will point guests to the elevator, which they  take to the seventh floor before the fun begins.

The Kite Flight runs on Sept. 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
