Forest Hills Wine Bar Opens Doors and Frozen Yogurt Shop Coming Soon

By Nigel Chiwaya | September 18, 2012 3:44pm

FOREST HILLS — Ascan Avenue is the new spot for Forest Hills wine fans, as the area's first wine bar finally opened its doors on Monday.

Jack & Nellie's, located at 108-25 Ascan Ave., held a quiet grand opening Monday, welcoming customers without any advertising or giant signs.

Bar owner Cyril Burke, 45, said that despite the lack of advertising, 20-30 people still showed up, with word of mouth driving traffic.

"One person would stop by and then text their friend," Burke said.

In addition to wine, the bar serves small food plates. Burke said that the bar's mac & cheese, lamb meatballs and short ribs were a hit with the crowd.

The bar's opening, first reported by the blog Edge of the City, was originally schedule for August. However, a series of heavy rainstorms, which flooded businesses in Austin Street and homes around the neighborhood, forced Burke to delay the opening.

The bar is open daily from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Burke says he plans to hold a grand opening event sometime in the next few months.

Austin Street has lost a bakery, as Brownies and Cream, located at 72-40 Austin St., closed down Sunday. A manager at the store explained the closing to DNAInfo.com New York, saying "It just didn't feel right."

Homefront Decor, which sells incense, candles and soaps at 72-24 Austin St., has lost its lease and will be closing at the end of the month.

On the Horizon
The Forest Hills frozen yogurt scene is about to get more crowded, as Vanilla Sky has placed a "coming soon" sign at 70-35 Austin St.

Vanilla Sky, which will operate a building that used to house Europan Cafe, will offer self-serve frozen yogurt, and join the likes of Oko, Yogo Monster and the still under-construction Red Mango.
