FORDHAM — Emergency crews rushed to an office building near Fordham University Tuesday morning to investigate a suspicious white powder, officials said.

An FDNY Hazmat team and the NYPD raced to a fifth floor office in One Fordham Plaza to inspect the substance, which was discovered under a desk, officials said.

Twenty people were inside the office, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

There were no reported injuries and the building was not evacuated, the FDNY and the NYPD said. But occupents said they were frightened to see so many emergency crews outside.

"We were all nervous when we looked out the window and saw all of the ambulances and firetrucks," said Michelle Francis, 57, an employee at Montefiore Medical Center on the sixth floor of the building.

"I was waiting for information to find out if everything was okay or not okay."

Firefighters stood by in case workers needed to be detoxed, an FDNY spokesman said.

Crews were still on scene about an hour after the initial 911 call.
