PARK SLOPE — A fleet of new food trucks will serve up tasty treats every Saturday at Grand Army Plaza this fall.
The trucks debuted this past weekend and are scheduled to park beneath Grand Army Plaza's arch near Bailey Fountain every Saturday through Nov. 24. Their hours will vary, with some trucks arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. and staying until 5 p.m.
The Prospect Park Alliance invited the trucks to become a weekly fixture because of the success of the food truck "rally" held every third Sunday at Grand Army Plaza, spokesman Paul Nelson said.
"[The food truck rallies] have been so sucessful; there's obviously a huge demand," Nelson said. "Some of these trucks have huge followings."
So far four trucks have signed on, and Prospect Park Alliance officials hope to add two more mobile food vendors to the roster, Nelson said. Because of prior scheduling conflicts, some of the trucks won't be there every Saturday, Nelson said.
The Alliance will set up about a dozen cafe-style tables and two dozen chairs beneath the arch so diners can sit and enjoy their food, Nelson said.
The four trucks on board so far are: Rickshaw Dumplings, which serves Chinese dumplings with dipping sauce; Green Pirate Juice, which serves vegan, locally-sourced juices, Kimchi Taco, which serves tortilla-wrapped Korean barbecue and kimchi, and The Morris Truck, whose menu includes grilled cheese sandwiches with fancy add-ons like truffle butter and onion caper mayo.
The Alliance is also exploring the possibility of bringing food trucks to other spots in the 585-acre park, Nelson said. The Belgian waffle truck Wafels & Dinges recently signed a five-year Parks Department contract to serve food at Prospect Park's Ninth Street entrance starting in the spring of 2013.
Grand Army Plaza is already something of a food hub. Aside from the monthly food truck rallies, it's also the site for a weekly greenmarket open year-round on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
