Fire Breaks Out at Popular Dominican Chicharon Restaurant in Inwood

INWOOD — Firefighters put out a basement fire at a popular Dominican restaurant on Broadway Thursday afternoon Tuesday, officials said.

The fire at the Elsa La Reina del Chicharon at 4840 Broadway, near Academy Street, broke out at approximately 2:30 p.m., according to an FDNY spokesman. Plumes of smoke coud be seen rising from the basement.

There were no reported injuries.

Sixty firefighters from 12 units fought the small fire for about 35 minutes before extinguishing it at 3:05 p.m., officials said.

The cause of the fire at the three-story building was not immediately known.

The restaurant owner could not be reached for comment.
