Pre-Fall Menswear Hits the Streets

By Patrick Michael Hughes | August 27, 2012 6:56am

MANHATTAN — Debonair pre-fall men’s fashions have hit the avenues of the metropolis.

An assertive, confident and well dressed fall fashion for the urban male is cropping up across the city — with exact proportions, fit, color and the critical fashion deportment needed to make the new season brilliant.

The best transitional looks borrowed from classic pieces in the traditional men’s wardrobe —  waistcoats and tailored shirts- In wool blended fabrics, oxford cloth and slimming candy stripes led the way in presence. The fashion news is how they are being worn, waistcoats are exceedingly trim highlighting a svelte natural waist - the twist with tailored shirting is buttoning the top collar and rolling the sleeves above the elbow. This look creates greater symmetry when worn with very slender lower calf cropped trousers paired with dazzling socks and lace up shoes.

Street Chic also spotted UK Indie Rock musician Saul Ashby in Washington Square Park wearing a sharp and tailored navy blue and vivid aqua candy stripe dress-shirt. We thought the tailored shirt look was very elegant in a micro-floral print tucked into fitted, cropped five pocket worsted trousers, evoking the lissome style of the French New Wave celebrity Serge Gainsbourgh.

Model Raphael Lazzini created a striking biker look in SoHo in a lean long sleeve indigo silk knit Henley. Spanish fashion designer Joseba wore an extraordinary inky black and indigo draped knit ensemble by Comme des Garçons. Dubai’s youngest couturier, fashion prodigy Andrea Brocca graced Washington Square Park wearing a plush beast vest with bold utility zipper details.

Early sightings of suits showcase a taste for steely gray neutrals paired with lavender and rose tones in a precise shrunken proportion, a trend in men’s fashion that has become more pronounced. Among those donning the trend was Will Edmiston of The Harvard Library in New York City, wearing a navy suit in shrunken proportions.

Next season’s ideal suit silhouette looks like an even narrower series of faceted pipes.

Like the rest of the fashion conscious we too are breathlessly awaiting the September showing of Hedi Slimane’s Spring 2013 men’s collection for Saint Laurent Paris.
