Hot Looks for Back to School Clothes in New York City

Fall is here, which means it’s time to get up-to-date on the latest fashions. Here are a few easy tips to keep your kids on trend this fall.

Mixed prints: Printed dresses are very “in” this season, especially for preschool and kindergarten girls, said Elysha Lenkin, a stylist for adults and children. If you want to be a bit more adventurous, try mixing different patterns, like polka dots and stripes, and using bright colors for your little girl, said Carol Faber-Adams, owner of Torly Kid, a children’s clothing boutique in TriBeCa. Faber-Adams added that patterns such as ikat and chevron are popular this season. “People are getting more bold,” she said.

Checks, please: There’s nothing like a little boy in a button-down plaid or checked shirt, said Lenkin, who suggests rolling the sleeves up for a more relaxed look. For older boys (third grade to sixth grade), layering is always stylish. A rocker T-shirt under a button-down shirt is a smart yet casual look, she said. But layers may not work as well for restless toddlers who might find the style heavy and comfortable.

Borrowed from the boys: Pair a button-down boys shirt with a delicate cardigan or over a pretty top for a trendy fall style. This is a great look for older girls (fourth grade and up), said Lenkin.

Colored corduroys: While black pants and jeans are always a staple, Lenkin says you can kick it up a notch with colored corduroys, a style that is trending this season. Older girls (third to seventh grade) especially are turning to bright, fun colored pants, said Faber-Adams.

Sporty graphic T’s: Boys are loving T-shirts with sports images, said Faber-Adams. Extreme sports on T-shirts are also big and very popular among boys of all ages.

Big no-nos: Some clothes should stay at the back of the closet this season. “Cargo pants are so ugly,” said Lenkin. Faber-Adams also suggests doing away with peace-sign logos on T-shirts, a style that has been overdone in the last few seasons.

Tunic and tights: This is a classic style for girls of all ages, said Faber-Adams. Pair some black tights with a colorful tunic for a trendy yet comfortable fall look that looks great on all body types.

Color me bright: Fall colors tend to be deeper and richer than summer trends. Purple is very in this season, said Lenkin. Forest green, cherry red and royal blue are also great colors for the season, according to Faber-Adams. She said that color blocking is an easy style to keep in mind for all ages but added that neon colors, while big this summer, are taking a backseat for the fall.

Material girl:  Experiment with different fabrics for the fall. Faber-Adams said suede will be popular this season. Sparkle, shine and a touch of velour will always be in for little girls (kindergarten and preschool), she said.

Keep it comfy: Comfort plays a huge role in kids’ clothes, said Lenkin. Younger children especially will be active all day, and you don’t want their clothes getting in the way. “Nothing tight, nothing itchy or scratchy,” she said.
