STATEN ISLAND — Hundreds of Staten Island residents headed to Midland Beach to meet with local police officers, firefighters and politicians at Tuesday's National "Night Out."
The event, which is in its 29th year, also featured a disc jockey who played songs for children to dance to on a stage set up at the beach's Promenade Turtle Circle at Father Capodanno Boulevard and Iroquois Avenue.
"I like it," said Lissette Nieves, 35, of Westerleigh. "I think it's good for the kids."
Nieves said she comes nearly every year to the event because her children are interested in law enforcement.
She said the event helps promote neighborhood safety and the programs police run for neighborhood kids and teenagers.
"They have a lot of good programs," she said. "There's things I never knew about."
The annual event, which was held in every borough, gave the community the opportunity to talk to a variety of police officers and work on keeping the neighborhood safe, according to the NYPD.
