NEW YORK — A massive chunk of 79th Street in Bay Ridge collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, swallowing three cars.
The 20-by-30-foot sinkhole at 453 79th Street was reported around 4:38 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.
Dominic Dolce, who lives on the block, said he was inside his house when he heard a loud noise and people screaming.
"I kind of panicked," Dolce said. "It looked like the car was gonna go in. The back wheel was completely in the hole."
Dolce said firefighters arrived soon after.
"They started putting in these big cables and another truck pulled it out," Dolce said.
No one was injured in the incident, and no homes had to be evacuated as a result. But the spokesman said the FDNY had to remove three cars from the hole.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the street to collapse, but City Councilman Vincent Gentile, who represents the neighborhood, said a similar incident happened on 92nd Street about a month ago.
"Thank God no one was hurt, but we can't be sure this will be the case next time," Gentile said. "We need to have a serious discussion about repairing infrastructure that's been here for over 100 years."
