STATEN ISLAND — A 21-year-old woman died in an early morning car crash in the Castleton Corners neighborhood, police said.

The victim, identified as Christina Battimelli, was driving a Hyundai Elantra westbound on College Avenue when she struck a pole at the corner of Carolina Place, at 2:25 a.m., police said.

Police said she was unconscious and unresponsive, and had suffered severe trauma. Battimelli was transported to Richmond University Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Calls to Battimelli's New Springville home were not immediately returned. Police said no criminality was involved, and that no other individuals or vehicles were involved in the crash.
