MANHATTAN — The only NYPD officer fired for the 2006 shooting of Sean Bell is suing the department to get his job back.
Gescard Isnora filed a suit in Manhattan Supreme Court arguing that the NYPD singled him out for dismissal, the Daily News reports.
Five officers, including Isnora, shot Bell to death outside of a Jamaica strip club the night before his wedding in 2006. At total of 50 shots were fired, with Isnora firing 11 times.Two of the officers in the shooting, detectives Michael Oliver and Marc Cooper, were allowed to resign and keep part of their pensions after agreeing to plea deals.
A third officer, Michael Carey, rejected a plea deal, but was found not guilty at a departmental trial. A fourth, Paul Hedley, was reprimanded but not charged by the department.Isnora was not offered a plea deal and was fired after being tried for violating firearms use and undercover enforcement action protocols.
"Everybody was given the opportunity to resign except Gessie," Isnora's lawyer, Philip Karasyk, told the Daily News. "It wasn't as if he got the offer and rejected it. They needed a scapegoat."
