Massive DSW Shoe Store to Open on Upper West Side

UPPER WEST SIDE — The DSW that's been under construction for months at 79th and Broadway will have its grand opening Saturday.

With three floors and 36,000 pairs of shoes, the 26,000 square-foot store is taking over the Filene's basement space after that store closed this past winter after filing for bankruptcy.

DSW said in a release Thursday that one of its three floors will be devoted to men's shoes.

DSW is also opening a new store on West 34th Street which will occupy three floors and 33,000-square-feet of retail space, but has not yet announced when that location will open.

"With 13 stores in the New York City metro area, we're quickly becoming the store of choice for an increasing number of shoe lovers in the Big Apple," said Mike MacDonald, DSW's president and chief executive officer.

The company boasted an
11.1 percent increase in sales in 2011 to $2.02 billion.

Harry's Shoes, the longtime shoe store four blocks away from the DSW store, is also in the process of expanding.

Owner Robert Goldberg, who owns the chain with his brother Randi, said he's not worried about competition because he believes the chain will draw more shoe shoppers to the area, and his store offers a different experience.
