Teens' Fight Near McCarren Pool Led to Arrests at Giglio Feast, Cops Say

WILLIAMSBURG — Two teenaged girls were arrested for an assault at the troubled McCarren Pool after their vicitm spotted them at a church fête, police said.

The two suspects in the latest incidence of violence at the renovated swim spot had just left McCarren Pool in their bathing suits when they allegedly picked a fight with the victim on July 10 at the corner of Driggs and Manhattan avenues.

A 16-year-old girl, who is being prosecuted as an adult, "punched her [victim] in the face with a closed fist" at 6:45 p.m., according to Deputy Inspector Terence Hurson, commanding officer of Greenpoint's 94th Precinct.

The blog A Walk in the Park was the first to report the incident, which Hurson said "fell under the radar" when it occurred.

"They didn't know each other," Hurson said of the victim and the two suspects, who face misdemeanor assault charges for the incident.

The second alleged assailant, a 14-year-old girl, will not go to court and has been issued a juvenile report, he said.

Hurson said that just one day after the incident, the victim recognized the two suspects at the Giglio FeastOur Lady of Mount Carmel Church's traditional yearly festival — and pointed them out to cops, who arrested the girls at the fair.

Videos of the alleged assault were posted on YouTube and later removed — but not before police used them to corroborate the 16-year-old assailant's actions.

"It was definitely her when we saw the video," Hurson said.
