UPPER EAST SIDE — The NYPD arrested a suspect Tuesday night in connection with a broad-daylight stabbing of a 25-year-old nail salon worker on the Upper East Side, police said.

Police officers walked the handcuffed, shirtless suspect into the 19th Precinct stationhouse about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and confirmed that he had been arrested in the stabbing.

An NYPD spokeswoman did not immediately have information about the arrest Tuesday evening.

The bloody attack, which occurred at East 86th Street and Second Avenue about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, unfolded after a homeless man tried to steal a black leather purse from Sabatha Tirado, a worker at the nearby European Wax Center who was running an errand with a friend, police said.

Sabatha Tirado, 25, was stabbed on the Upper East Side July 17, 2012.

As Tirado clung to her bag, the attacker plunged an 8-inch kitchen knife into her stomach, then fled without the purse, police said. The man also sprayed an unidentified substance at Tirado, police said.

Tirado, an Astoria resident, was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in stable condition, where she was recovering from non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday evening, officials and her coworkers said.

Police had described the suspect as a homeless man in his 40s, standing about 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, with an unshaven beard and an afro.
