MIDTOWN — Hundreds of dog-lovers packed the Grand Salon at the Jumeirah Essex House hotel Thursday night for the most expensive pet wedding in history.
Pet lifestyle expert Wendy Diamond, clad in a $6,000 strapless dress, married her Coton de Tulear Baby Hope Diamond to Virginia poodle Chilly Pasternak in front of dozens of Chihuahuas, dachshunds and other well-dressed pooches.
The event, which came with a nearly $160,000 price tag, marked a Guinness World Record for most expensive pet wedding. Proceeds from ticket sales to the event, in which all the fancy accoutrements were donated, went benefit the Humane Society of New York.
The black-tie event also celebrated the life of Lucky Diamond, a Maltese who died of spleen cancer in June.
Wendy Diamond rescued Lucky from a shelter in 1999 and later started the Animal Fair charity to support homeless pets.
“Lucky passed the torch of animal rescue to Baby Hope,” Diamond said to guests in the wedding program. “This pet wedding event was designed to find Baby Hope a partner to help carry on Lucky’s legacy of championing the underdog and saving animal lives.”
