HELL'S KITCHEN — The new Moynihan Station will be a sleek, clean transport hub more akin to Grand Central than Penn Station, according to new designs for the station's interior.
New renderings released in an Amtrak report on high-speed rail show off plans for a European-style train depot inside the James A. Farley Post Office Building on Eighth Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets.
According to the The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is running the project, all four renderings were shown during a public Amtrak event in May, but only two were released to the media.
The two mock-ups, first discovered by Transportation Nation, show the vision for the $267-million project to shift train service from the crumbling Penn Station to a more attractive space in the post office.
"The new Moynihan intercity passenger rail station will extend the present terminal across Eighth Avenue into the historic Farley Post Office Building to create a new signature station in New York," read the Amtrak report, released on Monday.
"The Moynihan/Penn Station complex will create a consolidated Amtrak operation on Manhattan’s west side and the high level of service and connectivity required for NextGen [High Speed Rail]."
The report also included two existing renderings of the station, where the first phase of construction on the expansion began in 2010. That section, largely a concourse expansion for Penn Station, is expected to be completed by 2016.
