Belt Parkway Chaos as Wrong-Way Driver Causes 3-Car Crash

BROOKLYN — A wrong-way driver on the Belt Parkway caused a three-car pileup in Bath Beach Tuesday morning, injuring 11 and forcing emergency workers to close the road's eastbound lanes at the start of the morning rush hour, the FDNY and news sources reported.

Eleven people were taken to Lutheran Medical Center and Coney Island Hospital, the FDNY said. Two of the patients were in critical condition.

The driver, 30, sustained a broken leg and was in stable condition at Lutheran Hospital, an NYPD source said. He was arrested for driving with a suspended license. His identity has not been released.

The accident happened at 6:15 a.m. near the eastbound exit for the Bay Parkway (Exit 5).

Eastbound lanes on the Belt Parkway were closed near the Bay Parkway for more than an hour, CBS New York and NY1 reported. Lanes reopened at about 7:30 a.m., but both news organizations reported severe traffic delays as a result of the closure.
