BROOKLYN — An 11-year-old boy was struck by a Verizon truck and seriously injured in Midwood Thursday afternoon, fire officials and a witness said.

The boy was riding his bike when he was hit just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Avenue I and East 3rd Street, an FDNY spokesman and a witness said.

The child, who was awake and breathing, was transported to Lutheran Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries to his arm and mouth, according to the FDNY.

The Verizon truck was traveling south on East 3rd Street when it hit the boy at the intersection of Avenue I, said Skot Jolson, who lives nearby.

The driver pulled over and got out to make sure the child was OK, Jolson said.

"He did the right thing," Jolson said. "He didn't drive off."

Verizon released a statement saying the company was looking into the incident.

"All initial indications are this was an unfortunate accident, and our employee acted accordingly," a Verizon spokesman said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the child and his family."
