NEW YORK — A gun-toting teen shot at a group of people standing on a Madison Avenue sidewalk late Tuesday night, then dodged police gunfire as he led cops on a wild foot chase through two public housing complexes in Harlem, authorities said.
Sean Terrell, 17, of East 108th Street, was charged with attempted murder, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and menacing against a police officer, police said.
No one was reported injured, but the officer who fired at Terrell was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for tinnitus, or ringing in his ears.
The frightening incident began about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, when three officers in the NYPD's Manhattan North Gang Unit, sitting in an unmarked police car, spotted Terrell walking north on Madison Avenue between 112th and 113th streets, police said.
Terrell then pulled out a revolver and fired several times into a group of people standing near the corner of Madison Avenue and 113th Street, police said. All of the bullets missed, and Terrell fled west on a walkway through the Taft Houses, across Fifth Avenue, into the Martin Luther King, Jr., Towers.
"I was ironing clothes and heard, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop," said witness Carina Graham, 26, who lives on the 14th floor in a building overlooking the scene of the shooting.
"It was chaos. I heard people yelling and screaming. People were jumping over the fence. It was so loud, it sounded like it was in my house.''
The three officers gave chase, with one of the cops, a 27-year-old, five-year NYPD veteran, firing at Terrell and missing. Police are investigating whether Terrell fired at cops, an NYPD source said.
Terrell was apprehended in the King Towers, police said. His gun was recovered nearby.
