MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS — Residents of a high-rise apartment on West End Avenue at 104th Street were temporarily evacuated Monday after a fire in the basement, FDNY officials said.

The fire at 900 West End Ave. started at 11:14 a.m. and was under control within the hour, fire officials said. No one was hurt.

Battalion Chief Stephen Kerry said the electrical fire started in a storage unit in the basement. The exact cause of the fire was still undetermined.

College student Benjamin Telushkin, 19, was home from college in Montreal.

"My mom was looking to see if pans were burning and was pulling them out of the oven. We got out to the hallways and they were pitch black," he said.

Officials with Atlantic West End Corp., which is listed as the owner on city records, declined to comment.
