MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS — A gas main in front of a nursing home on West 106th Street ruptured Friday morning, officials said.

The 4-inch high pressure line in front of the Jewish Home Lifecare at 120 W. 106th St. broke just after 9:30 a.m., FDNY and Con Ed officials said.

"When I woke up this morning, it smelled like gas and something nauseating," said Manuel Nunez, 81, a resident at Red Oak, a senior citizen center across the street. "I said, 'Something's going on,' but I remained calm.

"It could have been bigger," he added, "but thank God it wasn't."

Allan Drury, a Con Ed spokesman, said a contractor working on an excavation project in front of the nursing home struck the main, causing the rupture.

FDNY Battalion Chief Robert Holzmaier said there were no injuries and the nursing was not immediately evacuated.

"Our building was not affected," said a nursing home spokeswoman. "All of our residents are safe."

Firefighters and Con Ed crews were still on scene to stop the leak, officials said.
