LONG ISLAND CITY — An Amtrak worker was seriously injured Friday morning after he was hit by a Long Island Rail Road train in Hunters Point, an LIRR spokesman said.

The worker was on the tracks near the East River tunnel, close to Skillman Ave and 27 Street, when he was hit by a Port Washington-bound train about 3:45 a.m. It was unclear why the man was on the tracks.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with serious injuries.

Amtrak’s media relations officials did not respond to calls for comment Friday.
