UPPER WEST SIDE — Police are on the lookout for a retired NYU professor and Greenwich Village resident who went missing from the Upper West Side on Wednesday.

Irwin Goffman, 83, was last seen leaving his doctor’s office on West 82nd Street around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Goffman worked as an associate professor of sociology at NYU from 1967 to 1998, a university spokesman confirmed.

NYU sociology professor David Greenberg, who said he has known Goffman for nearly 40 years, said that he and his colleagues were disturbed by news of the social psychologist's disappearance.

"This comes as a great shock," Greenberg said, adding that he had mailed Goffman an invitation last week to an end-of-school-year party.

Goffman was last seen dressed in blue jeans, a blue long-sleeve button-down shirt and a beige jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
