STATEN ISLAND — The FDNY unveiled a brand-new home Thursday for Staten Island's only waterfront firehouse, Marine Company 9.
Fire officials cut the ribbon at a ceremony for the new $24 million, two-story facility, which will house the state-of-the-art fireboat Fire Fighter II, the FDNY said.
"This new firehouse is the latest development in what has been a monumental modernization of FDNY Marine Operations," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano.
“With our new fleet of fireboats, waterfront firehouses — and a newly developed tiered response that utilizes all of our tools, training and preparation — the department stands ready to provide unique lifesaving capabilities for all incidents on or near the water in New York City."
The new firehouse is one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the FDNY's history, the department said. The building has several sustainable elements, including a planted green roof, solar thermal collectors that heat water in the firehouse and provide supplemental heat for the building, and automatic lighting controls that minimize energy consumption.
