GOVERNORS ISLAND — Governors Island announced their summer series of events for 2012.
The island will be open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Mondays during a holiday weekend, from May 26 through Sept. 30. All the events and access to the island via ferry service from lower Manhattan and Brooklyn are both free.
“The 2012 season promises to provide visitors with car-free biking, extraordinary public art, fun runs and much more,” said Leslie Koch, president of The Trust for Governors Island, in a statement. “We are particularly pleased that for the first time, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, one of the City’s leading cultural institutions, will be presenting a free exhibition here that will complement other great activities throughout the Island.”
The Cooper-Hewitt show features graphic design produced after the year 2000, including posters, magazines and typography. It runs from May 26 through Sept. 3 at Building 110.
Other highlights include the participatory art event "FIGMENT" June 9 and 10th, New York Poetry Festival July 21 and 22nd and bocce ball competition on August 25.
The island will not be open to the public on Fridays as construction on a new park and public spaces slated to open in the fall 2013 is being done on those days.
Ferries leave every half hour for the island from Manhattan at the Battery Maritime Building at the corner of South and Whitehall streets and from Brooklyn from Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 6.
You can also bring your bike on the ferry for cycling around the island.
