MANHATTAN — A Maryland man who was visiting friends in the city was struck and killed by a cab in Hudson Square early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The accident occurred on Sixth Avenue and Watts Street just after 4:30 a.m., the FDNY said.

According to police Dan Fellegara, 29, a project manager at Costello Construction and former college soccer player at Clarkson University, was trying to cross Sixth Avenue at the intersection when he fell and was struck by the cab.

Police said he was rushed to New York Downtown Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Fellegara's distraught father, Peter, said he was "very close" to his son, who was staying at the Hampton Inn, just steps away from the scene of the accident.

Witnesses said that the cab driver broke down when he learned that Fellegara had died.

"The police told the cab driver [that the victim had died] and the cab driver started crying," said Ignacio Carmago, who works at nearby restaurant Kool Bloo.

Police said that the taxi stayed on the scene and there was no indication of criminality.
