HARLEM — A Harlem man suspected of killing his 13-year-old sister as she slept and shooting his mom before getting into a wild gunbattle with cops has been charged with her death.
Steven Murray, 28, who was shot 14 times during a fusillade in which the officers fired 84 times, is in stable condition at Harlem Hospital pending his arraignment on murder and attempted murder charges, police said.
Murray allegedly executed his sister Annie Fryar inside his mother's apartment at the Polo Grounds Houses Tuesday, then wounded his mother, Christine Fryar, 44, before fleeing, police said.
He was set off by a feud with his mother over house chores, according to reports. His gun was found at the scene, police said.
A wounded Christine Fryar gave police a description of her son, and authorities tracked him down and returned fire when he aimed a gun at them, cops said. The gunbattle unleashed a hail of more than 80 police bullets, sources said.
Christine Fryar was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition.
One of Annie Fryar's friends said she was wary about discussing her brother.
"She hesitated to mention her brother. She was like, 'Yeah he's my brother, but not really,'" said a boy who said he's known Annie since September. "We were shocked and curious."
Murray had moved into the apartment recently, after spending time in North Carolina, according to reports.
Terriya Hanley, Annie's friend since they were toddlers, said her class was shocked when they heard the tragic news Tuesday.
"Everyone was crying and we all just went home," said Hanley. "She doesn't have to go through all this."
Other classmates remembered her as a joyful young woman.
"She was funny, always plays around," said Audrey Herrera, her friend since fifth grade.
"You will always be missed," Herrera wrote on a placard at a memorial set up in her honor.
