MANHATTAN — The MTA is set to release a new iPhone and Droid app that features art installations throughout the subway and commuter rail systems.
The app will feature more than 200 different works of art throughout the subway, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North stations that were commissioned by the MTA's Arts for Transit program that feature such well-known artists as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Murray, Roy Lichtenstein and Sol Lewitt.
The app will also include photos, background information, and turn-by-turn directions for each of the different art installations.
“This is a phenomenal use of technology,” MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said in a statement. “This app will help our customers recognize that New York’s transportation system, besides helping 8.5 million people get to work every day, is a world-class art museum with works by many of the most renowned artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.”
