MANHATTAN — A man hanged himself with a makeshift noose inside a Midtown jail cell Saturday after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife, police said.

Alexander Gonzalez, 40, was discovered hanging by his shirt inside a cell at the Midtown South Precinct on West 35th Street shortly before 3:30 Saturday afternoon, after an alleged early-morning dispute with his wife at a Midtown apartment, the NYPD said.

Officers cut Gonzales down and rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Gonzalez turned himself in to police earlier that day, after fleeing the scene of the alleged dispute with his wife, 33, who called the cops about 7 a.m. to report the incident, the NYPD said. She was taken to an area hospital, treated and released, police added.

An investigation is ongoing.
