Cornell Reportedly Wins $100M City Tech Campus Competition

By Tom Liddy | December 18, 2011 11:20pm

MANHATTAN — After a months long battle, officials are expected to announce Monday that Cornell University has won the $100 million competition to build a state-of-the art engineering and applied science campus in the city, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The decision comes just days after Stanford, considered one of the frontrunners in the race among a handful of elite universities, bowed out of the competition.

A short time after the west coast powerhouse made the announcement, Cornell announced that it had received a staggering $350 million anonymous donation to put towards its tech campus efforts.

The Ithaca-based college is hoping to build an eco-friendly campus on Roosevelt Island. The school plans a 2 million square foot campus after Goldwater Hospital, which is owned by the city, closes in 2014.

The campus would house around 2,000 grad students, a sustainable campus and startup incubators.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the competition in July as part of a plan to make the city a tech center on par with Silicon Valley.

The city and Cornell did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
