Rockabilly Look Brings Biker Jackets Back

By Patrick Michael Hughes | December 7, 2011 12:41pm

MANHATTAN — New York men are hitting the late-fall streets with a versatile standard — the leather biker jacket.

One of the key looks to emerge from the men's runway shows of Milan for Spring 2012 was Rockabilly, and while the main component of that look — the biker jacket — is hardly a fresh item on Manhattan's streets, what is new is the cleaner, more well groomed way it is being worn.

This is not a Hell's Angels look, nor is it your father's bomber jacket from the '80s. According to fashion industry trend reports, the resurgence of the clean-cut biker jacket is linked to the approaching 60th anniversary of Sun Records, the legendary label that launched stars including Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

Street Chic observed a range of biker jackets decorated with zippers, buckles, knit cuffs and collars, and belt loops, as well as those with minimal styling. Jackets were worn with layers from open necked T-shirts to cotton hoodies, V-necked sweaters and baseball caps.

The retro Rockabilly look works with recent men's hair styling trends of brushed beehives, well groomed, asymmetric curtains and the '50s-inspired slick look.
