Adoption Offers Pouring in for Pit Bull Abandoned on Thanksgiving

INWOOD — Calls from dog lovers are pouring in after DNAinfo reported the tale of a brindled pit bull that was abandoned outside a popular Dyckman Street restaurant on Thanksgiving.

Since appealing to the public for a new home for the 1-year-old pup, calls from as far as Schenectady, N.Y., have come in asking to meet “Inwood Sandy,” as she was named by her rescuers, at her foster home in Inwood.

“It’s amazing, people really want to meet her,” said Laura Simpson, an Inwood resident and dog lover who has been helping lead the charge to find Sandy a new home.

“It’s great that people are interested in adopting a pit bull,” Simpson said. “Usually it’s very tough to find pits a home, because they are so misunderstood.”

Inwood Sandy has become a bit of a local celebrity as she lives on Dyckman Street with Inwood resident Katie Weaver and eight cats, four of which Weaver is also trying to place in new homes and four that are her own.

“She’s totally changed from the frightened dog she was a little more than a week ago,” Weaver said, calling Sandy an “adorable” dog that is good with adults, children and cats. “She’s very playful and gentle and allows me to take stuff out of her mouth.”

Weaver, who said she is battling allergies with so many furry friends in her home, said Sandy is not the first pit bull or pit mix she has rescued. Two of Weaver’s recent finds are now living “wonderful lives” in California and Vancouver, Canada.

Weaver said she is meeting with interested parties throughout the weekend in order to find the right new home for Sandy, but would be taking care to find the right fit.

“We are not first come first served here, we want to be sure it’s the right fit,” she said. “She’s a wanted child.”
