Capes and Wraps Take Center Stage as Fall Blows In

By Patrick Michael Hughes | November 21, 2011 12:12pm

MANHATTAN — November's variable weather has meant that Manhattanites are pulling a multitude of Autumn fabrics — in different weights, colors and textures — out of the closet.

"Street Chic" has noticed the strong presence of updated Kaftans and unconstructed drapes and capes across town. The draped Kaftan is not a new fashion story, but one that has been recurring for the past few season, and is predicted by fashion trend reports to last at least another season.

The unconstructed look is taking a surprising number of turns in shape, color and detail. A range of silhouettes can be seen on the streets of Manhattan, including poncho cagoules, over-the-head knits with large, ribbed turtlenecks and voluminous wraps.

The colors are hitting the fall 2011 and spring 2012 fashion palettes that we've seen in various fashion week shows — bright poppy colors, inky blues, blue grays, jade greens and grenadine shades. Details such as hoods, fur trim, pompoms and fringes were very much in evidence on the streets, too.

However, it's not all billowing, gypsy-style wraps and capes. Street Chic noticed tailored looks, such as 1930s inspired cape jackets and Peter Pan collars, as well as oversized "portrait" collars and fitted knits.
