CENTRAL PARK — Who knew cleaning up could be so much fun?

More than two dozen children and their families came to Central Park Saturday to help tend to the greenspace that had been ravaged by a freak fall storm.

The volunteers, part of the Central Park Conservancy's bi-annual Family Volunteer Day, raked up leaves and laid down fresh mulch that was made from some of the 1,000 trees that were downed in the Oct. 29 storm, which dumped nearly 3 inches of heavy snow on the park.

"It was a nice way to give back to the park, we're happy to have an opportunity to help," said Elyse Singer, 44, of the Upper West Side, who brought her daughter Sophie Singer-Brahmie, 8 to the project near Mineral Springs Cafe.

"Central Park is our backyard. Kids in the suburbs do this in their yards, but this is our backyard."

As for Sophie, she said: "I thought this was a fun idea and I didn't want to spend time in the house."

The kids said that they loved pushing the wheelbarrows around.

"You're giving back to the community, we're taking care of the environment and it's great to be outdoors moving around," Deidre Belcher, 40, who came with her daughter Kiara Belcher, 7.
