Alleged Columbia iMac Bandit Broke in Through Second-Floor Window

By Patrick Hedlund | November 10, 2011 11:02am

MANHATTAN — Call him the iBandit.

Police are searching for a man suspected of breaking into a Columbia University administration building in broad daylight last month and stealing an Apple iMac desktop computer.

The suspect climbed through a second-floor window of Hamilton Hall at 1130 Amsterdam Ave., near West 116th Street, about 5 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 15, and clambered out with an iMac computer in tow, the NYPD said.

Hamilton Hall sits in a high-traffic area of the college's Morningside Heights Campus and contains the Ivy League school's undergraduate admissions offices.

A university spokesman said the computer that was stolen was a "personal computer" that did not contain any sensitive student information.

Surveillance footage of the man, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, shows him walking down a sidewalk after the incident with what appears to be the computer wrapped in black packaging.

Anyone with information in regard to this burglary is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website, or texting tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
