MIDTOWN − Apple unveiled a sleek new design for its flagship Fifth Avenue store Friday morning.

Work on the approximately $6.7 million redesign project, which reduced the number of glass panes from 90 to 15, started in June. The glass cube on street level underwent the most notable change — with larger panes of glass and fewer joints.

Dozens of Apple fans and tourists lined up along Fifth Avenue in advance of the opening at 10 a.m., to be the first inside the newly designed store. While the store is usually open 24 hours-a-day, it closed at 10 p.m. Thursday in advance of the re-launch.

Phillip Nappi, 72, of Queens, said he had been waiting for almost an hour to have the first spot in line. After 10 minutes inside the store, he left with a wide grin on his face.

“I have passed the store so many times but never really entered it,” he said. “It looks just gorgeous.”

Apple’s store at 767 Fifth Ave. is open every day of the year, but was notably closed for 90 minutes on Wednesday Oct. 19 for a memorial for Steve Jobs, who passed away on Oct. 5 after a long battle with cancer.

In keeping with the company's rules, employees declined to comment on the redesign.
