EAST HARLEM — Firefighters rescued a pregnant woman who was trapped inside a car in East Harlem after a crash Thursday morning, an FDNY spokesman said.
The woman, who was not identified and whose age was not immediately available, was traveling with another passenger at 128th Street near Third Avenue, when their 4-door sedan got into a crash with a dump truck, trapping them both inside, police and fire officials said.
They were taken by ambulance to Mt. Sinai Medical Center in unknown condition, fire officials said.
A police officer who responded to the crash scene said the woman was sitting in the passenger seat and a man was driving eastbound on 128th Street as the dump truck came off the Third Avenue Bridge ramp from the Bronx, the officer said. They collided near the Third Avenue intersection.
The officer said the car cut in front of the dump truck, which crashed into it.
He said the people in the car did not appear to be seriously injured. But both were taken out of the vehicle on stretchers.
A worker at Harlem River Park across the street from the crash scene said the intersection is very dangerous. There is an overpass for pedestrians to get into the park so they don't have to cross 128th Street to the park on the north side of the street.
"Usually, I take the stairs. If it's busy, I won't take my chances," said Roland Esclara, a parks and recreation maintenance worker. "It's dangerous."
