MIDTOWN — An NYPD traffic officer was hit by a cab at the corner of 57th Street and Sixth Avenue on Monday morning, police said.

Witnesses said the taxi was trying to turn right onto Sixth Avenue when it hit the officer, who was directing traffic at the intersection. The officer was knocked to the ground and hit his head, according to witnesses. The cab stopped and remained on the scene.

"There were a bunch of cops buzzing around," said Mark Richards, who rents bicycles on the corner. "There must have been twenty cops over here."

Police said the officer was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries to the right knee and head.
