UPPER WEST SIDE — Opening night of the Metropolitan Opera's 128th season on Monday night featured a parade of couture and eye-popping clothes, and this was even before the curtain was raised.

The plaza outside the Lincoln Center was overflowing with classic style, quietly elegant silhouettes and the season's key trends of rich embellishment, radiant jewel tones in deep red, sapphire and emerald green and the use of bold jeweled accessories.

Gowns by Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karan, and Ralph Lauren provided monochromatic minimalist fashion statements in shining white, sheer black and muted gold.

Men’s attire ranged from the most formal white-tie and tails to black tie by Thom Browne and formal business attire. Street Chic also noted the striking return of the onyx tuxedo shirt stud.

Russian Soprano Anna Netrebko, who debuted in the rarely-performed Anna Bolena opera about Henry VIII's late wife Anne Boleyn on Monday. This season's offerings at the Met also include Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, Puccini's La Boheme.
