Beyonce's Pregnancy Celebrated with LES Bakery's 'Baby Bun'

LOWER EAST SIDE — These bakers are taking Beyonce’s bun in the oven literally.

A popular Lower East Side bakeshop decided to pay tribute to the pop star’s pregnancy with husband Jay-Z by making a prenatal pastry in honor of the future bundle of joy.

The owners of Babycakes on Broome Street came up with their Beyonce baby-bump bun, which will grow along with the "Single Ladies" songstress's belly, after the singer announced her pregnancy on MTV last month.

Each week, the vegetarian and vegan-friendly bakery displays one of its signature buns baked to the size of Beyonce’s unborn child — an idea that owner Erin McKenna came up with after hearing the news.

“It was something fun that made us all laugh, and we just thought it would be a fun project to keep up,” she said.

McKenna said she and her staff check a pregnancy website to estimate the baby’s size — they peg Beyonce at about 18 weeks along — and then bake the bun accordingly.

The spiced pastry is made with garbanzo fava bean flour, pumpkin puree, pear puree, agave nectar, coconut oil and vanilla glaze, but the actual Beyonce baby bun is for display only.

“So far she’s at 3 1/2 inches,” McKenna said, noting that the baby grew a half-inch over the past week. “The final bun is going to be pretty big. It’ll be a challenge.”

She said patrons get a kick out of the gag, laughing and taking pictures of the baby-inspired delicacy.

“They check back on the progress,” McKenna added of her loyal clientele.

Babycakes, which also has locations in Los Angeles and Orlando, as well as another one set to open in L.A., recently celebrated the six-year anniversary of its original Broome Street shop.
