DOT to Propose Changes to Dangerous Uptown Greenway Entrance and Roadway

By Carla Zanoni | September 12, 2011 2:12pm

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Months after hearing complaints that a roadway redesign has made cycling and pedestrian traffic more dangerous for residents, the city plans to unveil a new proposal for a one block stretch near 181st Street and Riverside Drive.

Department of Transportation officials said they plan to unveil a new proposal to improve bike and pedestrian access to the block and bridge that connects Riverside Drive and the Greenway path along the Hudson River.

Community advocates had complained that the renovated road, which serves as an on-ramp to the Henry Hudson Parkway, is too dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists who want to access the Hudson River Greenway.

In April, a DOT spokeswoman said the department was investigating ways to improve safety and calm traffic at the location.

The presentation will take place during CB12’s traffic and transportation committee meeting on Monday, September 12, at 7 p.m. at 40 Haven Avenue, between 168th and 169th streets.
