GREENWICH VILLAGE — The boiling hot real estate market on Bleecker Street has cooked The Lobster Place fish market.
The market sold its last lobster at its 252 Bleecker St. location on Sunday, company president Ian MacGregor said Monday morning.
MacGregor said the cost of rent and "mismanaged expectations" with the location's landlord forced the closure.
"The rent on Bleecker is pretty expensive and it was a small store," he said. "Even though we were pretty successful, we found that it was still pretty difficult to pay the rent."
MacGregor said the company will focus on its shop in Chelsea Market, where all staff from the Bleecker Street shop, which opened in 2005, will now work.
Lifestyle bloggers Smith & Ratliff wrote on Twitter that they were sorry to see The Lobster Place go.
"So sad to learn that our friends at the Lobster Place (@fishguysNYC) are closing their Bleecker Street location on Monday," they posted.
MacGregor said he hopes to see customers from the Village in the Chelsea shop.
"We're sorry to be leaving the neighborhood but hope our loyal clientele will join us at Chelsea Market," he said.
