Fire Tears Through Times Square Building

By Della Hasselle | August 30, 2011 8:38am

TIMES SQUARE — A fire tore through a three-story building in a building near Times Square early Tuesday morning.

The building, at 711 Seventh Ave., at West 48th Street, which contains the Sage Theater, caught fire at roughly 2 a.m., the fire department said. It was under control nearly 90 minutes later.

No injuries were reported. More than 130 firefighters were deployed to the scene, the FDNY said.

A worker at the scene hired to clean up after the blaze said the started in the back of a first-floor souvenir shop before spreading up to the theater.

The location of the theater was once a two-screen Spanish language cinema, and then became an event space called Sage Theater that holds shows, parties, classes, fashion shows and exhibits, according to the Times Square Alliance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
