WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A manhunt filled a Washington Heights street with heavily armed officers and K9 units while a helicopter buzzed overhead Monday night as they tracked down a man suspected of burglary, according to NYPD and witness accounts.
Cops began searching for the suspect inside buildings on West 173rd Street, between Broadway and St. Nicholas Avenue, shortly before midnight Tuesday after a burglary at 615 W. 172nd St., police confirmed.
The pursuit continued for more than two hours with police dogs attempting to sniff out the suspect and a helicopter trying to spot him from overhead, a witness at the scene said. Residents used Twitter to spread information, and a crowd gathered outside the address.
Despite their extensive efforts, police were unsuccessful in capturing the suspect, who remains unidentified, a NYPD spokesman said.
Police recently launched an awareness campaign regarding home invasion burglaries in the neighborhood, advising residents on the best way to protect themselves and property. The campaign was launched days after a gun was discharged during a home burglary in Inwood.
