Free Kimchi For Korea Day in Central Park

CENTRAL PARK — Fill up on bibimbap and enjoy some k-pop at Korea Day in Central Park on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

The celebration of Korean culture, now in its second year, runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Naumberg Bandshell, just south of Bethesda Terrace, in the middle of the park, between 66th and 72nd streets.

At this food-focused event, attendees can sample free kimchi, the Korean staple made with fermented cabbage, as well as the stir-fried noodle and vegetable dish japchae, bulgogi and ssam (beef in a soy sauce marinade) and jeon (Korean pancake).

Participants can try on traditional Korean clothes called hanbok, and they'll also get a chance to watch the creation of Korean rice cakes, a process called "dduk-mea chi-gi," where giant wooden hammers are used to beat the rice cake and make it more adhesive.

Chamber orchestra Camerata Virtuosi New Jersey will perform classical music, and the pop band Sorea will headline the day's closing ceremonies.

There will also be a "k-pop" — Korean pop music — competition where eight teams will compete for a chance to perform in Korea.
